How will silt and turbidity issues be managed during the construction of North Port Quay? |
 Silt curtain diagram.
To reduce the impact of construction of NPQ on Port Beach, sediment and silt curtains will be used extensively to control the sediment on all water-based construction operations, principally the construction of seawalls.
Silt curtains are devices that control suspended solids and turbidity in the water column generated by dredging and disposal of dredged material. Consequently, silt curtains are considered an integral and necessary part of the regulatory strategy for many dredging and water-based construction projects. Dredging contractors attest to the fact that, in their experience, silt curtains work under many of the site conditions encountered in navigation and environmental dredging projects.
As the seawall is being constructed the area will be surrounded by a continuous floating curtain. When the seawall has been constructed the two openings to the ocean will have a curtain across them so as to contain sediment and silt. Because the curtain does not go to the seabed water circulation continues but the speed of silt and sediment particulates which travel closer to the surface is reduced and they fall to the seabed.
