What makes North Port Quay sustainable?

NPQ will be designed to be a community powered by renewable energy, making it a world first model of sustainability. All electricity needed to power the homes and businesses at the new development will be produced from renewable energy sources including solar, wind and wave power.

NPQ will run on a smart grid with capacity to sell excess power to the Fremantle Port and Synergy. It is planned that NPQ will be self sufficient in water supply through desalination by wave power generators.

The Western Australian Government policy stresses that the use of coastal resources should be equitable and takes account of the likely needs of future generations. Demands for housing, tourism, recreation, commercial and other activities along the coast should be provided for within the bounds of ecological sustainability and within standards acceptable to the community.
